Can I add a 6th gear to my car?

Sometimes it is possible. You need a gearbox that fits to your engine and replace your old gearbox. If there is no 6-speed gearbox available, it will most likely not be possible. And even if it's possible on newer cars a control unit might freak out because your engine speed does not match the wheel speed any more.

But, no matter what, it’s definitely more involved than just screwing in a “shift ball thing”.
